In this paper we discuss:

1. The African “epidemic of coups” in Burkina Faso, Chad, Gabon, Guinea, Mali, and Niger;
2. The regional issues that have created fertile ground for these juntas to take power;
3. How civilian-led governments lost the confidence of wide segments of the populations, thus contributing to the local support for these coups;
4. The differences existing among the various coups, each of them with some unique attributes; and
5. How the growing tensions between the West and Russia have impacted the geopolitical landscape in Africa’s “coup belt.”
